About the Resource Center

The Frederick Douglass Resource Center is accessible to tourists, educators, artists, youth and adults in and around the Greater Rochester Metropolitan area. It is a source for in-depth information on the Life and Legacy of Frederick Douglass and others involved in the movements for the Abolition of Slavery and Civil Rights. It is Rochester, New York’s central institution for African-American Heritage and Culture.

The facility, located at 36 King Street, incorporates a resource library, a cultural gallery, classrooms and a meeting space. The auditorium accommodates over 130 visitors to engage in dialogue and programs programmed to enlighten and enliven the community.

The Frederick Douglass Community Development Corporation, has been active for over 10 years working to unite neighbors through community building initiatives. Having provided 23 single family homes and safe, secure housing for seniors in Frederick Douglass Village in the Corn Hill section of the City of Rochester, NY, the organization moved to the second phase in its mission, Cultural Education.

Through the Frederick Douglass Resource Center, the Legacy of Frederick Douglass and that of African-American Heritage and Culture have a forum from which activities are programmatically presented for the betterment of the community.

Cultural tours are available as well as dramatic interpretations and reenactments. The Frederick Douglass Resource Center once again gives voice to Rochester’s own Frederick Douglass. We invite you to visit the center and partner with us to reinvigorate the historical legacy of the most renowned African American Civil Rights leader of the 19th century, Frederick Douglass.
